SCC gears up for district at Lakefront meet

NEW ORLEANS – The St. Charles Catholic cross country team gainedmomentum for its district meet with an impressive performance at the Brother Martin/Jesuit Invitational held last Saturday at the Lakefront Course at UNO.

The Comets placed sixth while the Lady Comets came in seventh. Theteams also established 25 personal records at the meet.

Brother Martin placed first in the boys’ meet with 40 points followed by St. Paul’s with 51. Slidell was a distant third with 138 points, followedby Holy Cross (166), Newman (213) and St. Charles Catholic (225). In the girls’ meet, Newman took the team title with 37 points, easily out- distancing Slidell which finished with 99 points. Parkview Baptist wasthird with 147 points, followed by E.D. White (190), Covington (198),Fontaine-bleau (206) and St. Charles Catholic (214).St. Paul’s Pat Given defeated teammate Jimmy Wiggins to win theindividual boys’ meet with a time of 15 minutes, 45 seconds.

Mike Donnelly was the top finisher for the Comets, finishing in 17:14.

Courtney Baloney was right behind in 17:19, followed by Abner Sanders (17:44), Andre Ory (18:13) and Casey Cassagne (19:21). Chris Cotantinifinished in 19:52 and Matt Landry in 20:36.

For the girls, E.D. White’s Megan Kliebert came in first with a time of12:23. Kliebert edged out Newman’s Lauren Baum who finished in 12:26. Nicole Guarino led the Lady Comets with a time of 13:43. Liz Dufresne andJennifer Pollet both finished in a time of 14:34, followed by Brandi Catoire (15:01) and Robin Davis (15:18). Jessica Eschette came in at 15:54and Crissy Daigre in 16:04.

“It was a good tuneup,” St. Charles Catholic coach Frank Monica said. “Asfar as the team is concerned, it was one of the best meets of the year.”The meet was held on the same Lakefront course that the District 9-2A meet will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. St. Charles Catholic will competein that meet along with Riverside, West St. John, Ecole Classique and St.Martin’s.

The top seven boys and top seven girls from each team qualify for the state meet, which will be held Nov. 19 at Northwestern Louisiana Uni-versity in Natchitoches.
