Michael Kiral / L’Observateur / June 1, 1998

KENNER – The Riverside Extra Inning Club missed an opportunity to pull away in their American Legion opener and Jefferson Trophies took advantage of the opening for a 10-7 victory Wednesday at Bonnabel High School.

With the score tied at one heading into the third inning, the Extra Inning Club loaded the bases on a triple by Brandon Delaneuville into the right field corner, a walk by Keith LeBlanc and a hit by pitch by Ryan Rome.

Jefferson Trophies starter Al Bauer then hit Sean Delaneuville and walked Anson Matherne to give the Extra Inning Club a 3-1 lead.

After Joey Poirrier grounded to third with Rome being forced out of the plate, Bauer appeared to get out of the inning as Blake Duhe also grounded to third and Delaneuville being forced at home. But first baseman PaulMauroner dropped catcher Brian Milam’s throw, allowing Duhe to reach and keeping the inning alive. Kenny Clement followed with a grounder to thirdthat Chris Fuselier could not handle, bringing in Matherne to make the score 4-1.

Jefferson Trophies began to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the inning as David Amedee walked and Randy Pourciau singled to center.

Bauer then forced Pourciau at second but Brandon Delaneuville’s relay throw went past first, scoring Amedee and sending Bauer to second.

After Matt Glassman was hit by a pitch by Extra Inning Club starter Casey Duhe, Mauroner singled to right to score Bauer and cut the deficit to 4-3.

Fuselier followed with a slow grounder down the third baseline that stayed fair to load the bases. But Duhe got out of the inning by gettingMilan to ground to Poirrier at third. Poirrier threw home to forceGlassman with Blake Duhe firing down to first to complete the double play.

Glassman came in to pitch in the fourth and held the Extra Inning Club scoreless over the next three innings, pitching out of a one-out, first and second situation in the fourth and a bases loaded jam in the sixth.

Glassman’s pitching allowed Jefferson Trophies to rally in the fifth.

Pourciau reached on an error by second baseman Gary Entremont and Bauer followed with a double off the center field wall to open the inning off Extra Inning Club reliever Chris Bourgeois. Glassman then grounded out toshort to bring in Pourciau with the tying run.

After Bourgeois struck out Mauroner, Fuselier ripped a single to left to score Bauer and give Jefferson Trophies a 5-4 lead. Fuselier then stolesecond and came around to score as the throw from catcher Dustin Duhon deflected off his helmet into center field.

The East Jefferson High School-based team added four runs in the bottom of the sixth. After Keith White and Amedee led off with walks, Pourciausingled to right field to score White. The ball bounced past Rome and stuckin the fence, allowing Amedee and Pourcaiu to advance a base.

Bauer then brought both runners home with a shot over the third base bag and went to third on the throw home. Glassman followed with a ground outto bring in Bauer to increase the lead to 10-4.

The Extra Inning Club rallied in the top of the seventh as Poirrier walked and Duhon singled to open the inning. Seth LeBlanc then hit a sacrifice flyto right. Dean Whittington dropped the ball and had Duhon forced at secondbut Amedee dropped the ball to put runners at first and second.

After Entremont walked to load the bases, Glassman retired the next two hitters before Rome singled to center, scoring Duhon and LeBlanc to cut the deficit to 10-7. But Glassman came back to get Sean Delaneuville tohit a come-backer to the mound to end the game.
