Lutcher tennis teams sweep past St. Charles Catholic

LAPLACE – The Lutcher tennis teams remained undefeated on the seasonwith a sweep of St. Charles Catholic Tuesday afternoon at the Belle Terreand Riverlands country clubs.

The Bulldogs defeated the Comets, 9-0, while the Lutcher girls came awaywith a 8-1 victory against the Lady Comets. Lutcher moved to 10-0overall and 3-0 in league play with the victory.In the boys’ number one singles, Whitney Hines defeated David Nestor, 8-0.

Nestor went up in the final game on an ace before Hines rallied to go ahead40-30. Nestor tied the game with a deep volley, but Hines responded witha shot just inside the backline for the victory.In other boys’ singles play, Dustin Murray defeated Brandon Broussard, 8-1, Jeff Just defeated Jeff Champagne and David Poirrier came away with avictory over Kip Verbeek. Lance Roussel scored a victory over Jared Lorioand Chad Millet scored an 8-0 forfeit victory.

In doubles action, Hines and Murray defeated Nestor and Broussard, 8-3, inthe first match. Just and Poirrier closed out the days action with an 8-3victory against Verbeek and Lorio.

In one of the best matches of the day, Sherye Burns rallied from 3-1 and4-2 deficits to defeat Stephanie Bedoya, 8-4. Burns pulled to within onegame by breaking Bedoya’s serve and then tied the match with a lob to theback line. In the final game, Bedoya stayed alive when her shot hit the netand bounced over. But after a long exchange on match point, Bedoya’sreturn went into the net, sealing the victory.

In other matches, Rae Lynne Poirrier remained undefeated on the seasonwith an 8-0 victory over Lindsay Trant, Shelley Donadieu defeated NicoleScontrino, 8-3, Jennifer Hidalgo gained an 8-1 victory over Erin Vicknairand Rikkie Louque scored an 8-0 forfeit victory. Erin Shacklefordprevented a sweep with an 8-3 victory over Ashley Vicknair.

In doubles action, Burns and Poirrier came away with a hard-fought 8-3victory over Bedoya and Trant. In the first game, the Lady Bulldogs ralliedfrom a 30-0 deficit as Poirrier drilled a shot down the middle. The LadyComets returned Burns’ shot into the net at game point.The Lady Bulldogs broke the Lady Comets serve behind a nice shot at thenet by Burns and went ahead 3-0 on Poirrier’s serve. St. Charles Catholicrallied in the ensuing game as Bedoya intercepted a shot at the net anddrilled into the left corner. Trant followed with a clutch serve that theLady Bulldogs returned into the net, bringing the Lady Comets to within 3-1.

The Lady Comets pulled within a game with a service break. The LadyBulldogs responded with a service break of their own as Burns backhandeda shot at the net along the right baseline. Poirrier followed with a shot tothe backline as the Lady Bulldogs went ahead 4-2.The Lady Bulldogs surged to a 7-2 lead before the Lady Comets ralliedbehind shots down the baseline by Bedoya and Trant to take the 10th gameand went ahead 30-0 with Poirrier serving as Trant hit a shot at the netcross-court to the right baseline. But the Lady Bulldogs rallied, tying thescore as Burns intercepted a shot at the net. Burns followed with anothershot at the net and Poirrier closed out the match with a serve to the rightside that the Lady Comets could not return.
