Bad weather didn’t stop the breakfast
For the past 10 years, Get High on Life has sponsored a community prayer breakfast at the Knights of Columbus Home in Lutcher. This year’s breakfast was held last Saturday morning in preparation for the Lenten Season leading to the Resurrection of Jesus.
Salute to our troops
LaPlace – Wee Care students got a special visit from Specialist Jean-Pierre Vicknair, U.S. Army. Vicknair is the brother to Summer Broussard, a Wee Care teacher. Vicknair returned four weeks ago from a one-year tour in Afghanistan and is now stationed in Fort Knox, Ky. Vicknair taught the students a few Army moves like marching to two cadences, push-ups, low crawls, flutter kicks, how to salute, “attention” and “at ease” stances. He also had the students pretend to jump out of an airplane with a parachute.
How quickly things change
Times have really changed since 1968. The picture is an old photograph of the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office in the year 1968. P.D. Hebert was sheriff, and the photo shows all the deputies.

When preparing your spring garden don’t forget to soil test
Before you know it spring will be here, and many will be wishing they had started preparing their garden a little earlier. One of the most important steps to take in preparing the garden is to have the soil tested. Soil can be brought to your parish LSU Ag Center Office to be tested. The Routine Soil Test costs $10. Test results will usually arrive in 10-14 days.
River Parishes Hospital ‘Meet and Greet’
The Senior Friends Members at River Parishes Hospital recently attended a Mardi Gras/BCS Bowl Meet and Greet luncheon in the River Parishes Hospital Medical Pavilion. Members were asked to wear something purple, green and gold and were able to bring a guest to learn about the benefits available to them by becoming a member of the Senior Friends Program.

St. Peter Chanel presents the new gym
On Sunday, Jan. 29, St. Peter Chanel officially “cut the ribbon” on their new gym/multi-purpose building. Following the 11 a.m. Mass, clergy, guests, parents, students and parishioners processed to the new building to bless it and officially open its doors. Everyone enjoyed a jambalaya dinner and cake while checking out all of the features the new gym has to offer.
St. Timothy’s Preschool: Safety 101
The children at St. Timothy’s Preschool had a special visit for Robbie the Robot, along with members of the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office. H&R Block honors customer service
During H&R Block training program for the past three years they have used Lorise Cofield of the LaPlace Popeye’s Famous Chicken & Biscuits as an example of someone with excellent customer service skills. Because she always has a friendly smile and takes care of her customers needs over and above their expectations. Cofield has been selected as the first recipient of the H&R Block Community Customer Service Award. She was presented a gift certificate for a free tax return and a $20 gift card.

The local DuPont-Pontchartrain resident contractor group known as ECCO, which stands for Engineering, Construction, Contracting Organ-ization, assisted two River Parishes charities this Christmas season with monies generated from 2011 vending machine sales throughout the Reserve plant.
A feast fit for a king or vikings
The Engineering Design and Physics class at the Satellite Center recently completed a project on trebuchet design and construction. The “Vikings,” Brian Gough, Interactive Media, and Rhitt Growl, Digital Media, came to the Engineering Design class requesting their assistance in “constructing a device to help them destroy and demolish castle walls in their battles of the times.” Winners were rewarded with a feast of turkey legs and root beer. What did children do before gaming devices?
Back years ago, children didn’t have cell phones with games to play and televisions with games and other electronic devices with more games to keep them occupied. Children these days would probably laugh at you if you even tried to get them to play some of the games that were played back in the old days.
