A lost piece of history, found
Over the years, I have enjoyed exploring the shore of Lake Pontchartrain where the old towns once stood before the storm of 1915. I have written numerous articles for several different publications about these towns and tried to let you get the feel of how hard life was for these families that lived in this time along the lakeshore.
The dangers of apathy
When asked what’s the opposite of love, 99 percent of the people will incorrectly answer “hate.” Most of my life, I, too, thought the opposite of love was hate. One day, while driving to New Orleans across the spillway in Norco, I was listening to a Christian radio program, and the speaker said that the opposite of love is not hate but apathy. “Apathy!” I thought. “Such a harmless sounding word.”
Local receives high certification
Cheryl Allen of St. James has been certified as a National Trainer-Behavorial Classroom Management by the Center for Teacher Effectiveness. Allen earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston in HR Management with a minor in Training and Organizational Development.

Local high school high-achievers to participate in Tulane University conference
The inaugural Black Women’s Health Conference at Tulane University will take place Feb. 24-25, at the Josephine Louise Ballroom and Rogers Memorial Chapel. Among the participants is a cohort of students from Metro New Orleans schools selected to be part of the inaugural class of Black Women’s Health Scholars Program. Nominated by school counselors and local community members, and selected by a team of Tulane faculty, BWH Scholars were chosen based on their records of high academic achievement and proven leadership.

Digital Media team members from the Satellite Center in Luling participated in a field experience at Garrity Print Solutions in Harahan. Citrus: Things which affect blooming and fruit set
As we approach warmer days and the end of the severe cold weather, it is important to remove the citrus from your tree so the tree can rest and prepare itself for another fruitful year of production. Fruit should be removed from most all of the citrus trees except lemons and the late bearing citrus types like Moro oranges.

SJA honors Citizens of the Month
St. Joan of Arc Catholic School has recognized nine students as its “Citizen of the Month” for January. The program rewards students who go out of their way to help others, behave courteously or show exemplary manners. Teachers and other staff members nominate SJA students for the honor, and the winners receive a special pizza-and-soda luncheon on campus. SCC Starsteppers blow judges away
The St. Charles Catholic Starsteppers performed at the American All-Star Louisiana State Dance/Drill Team Competition on Sunday, Jan. 15, at the Cajun Dome in Lafayette. The Starsteppers performed three routines and placed in their division in all three routines. They also placed over-all in the state for two of their routines. The Starsteppers received fifth place in Division I for their Jazz routine. They placed first in Division I and fourth in the state for their High Kick Routine and they also placed first in Division I and second in the state for their Prop/Novelty routine. Also, one of the Starsteppers, Lauren Snowdy, was chosen, based on her solo dance audition and personal interview, to be a member of the American All-Star Staff.
